Try something really different at the West Coast Ostrich Show Ranch, where you can stand on an ostrich egg, feed an ostrich – and even sit on one.
The ostrich is the world’s largest living bird, averaging 2m (6.5ft) in height and weighing up to 156kg (344lb).
Ostrich farming started in the Cape as far back as the mid-17th century, and has been an important economic activity ever since. Ostrich feathers were a huge source of income in the Victorian era, when tons of feathers were exported to Europe.
The West Coast Ostrich Show Ranch offers guided tours every half hour in English, Afrikaans, German and French. The ranch makes and sells ostrich leather, egg and feather products, including some stylish leather shoes and handbags.
Make a day of it – after the show enjoy lunch in the air-conditioned restaurant located in a traditional Cape Dutch-style farmhouse. The ranch also offers a children’s playground and a shaded tearoom.
