Skydiving in Cape Town
Skydiving is without doubts one of the most exhilarating of sports! Photo courtesy Pierrick Vabre.
Taking in the beauty of Cape Town from altitude is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To the south, the Mother City lies sandwiched between towering Table Mountain and bustling Table Bay harbour; on the far side of the mountain you’ll see False Bay, Hout Bay and the splendour of the southern Peninsula as far as Cape Point. To the west there’s the world-famous Robben Island and the Atlantic breaking on the beautiful Cape West Coast; and to the north, the Langebaan Lagoon, a great kite-surfing and windsurfing venue.
You might like to pay Skydive Cape Town (www.skydivecapetown.za.net) a visit for your first skydiving experience. The company came into being in January 2002 after it was found that the Cape Parachute Club could no longer adequately cater for the needs of skydivers in Cape Town. A third aircraft was sourced to complement the existing two so the company could accommodate more local skydivers, tandems and students, and speed up turnaround times.
The core management team of Skydive Cape Town consists of Anton Scalabrino, who was a custodian of the Cape Parachute Club for 15 years, and recent arrivals from Gauteng Peter Mauchan (Long Pete), Ronél Horne and Mark Bellingan. A freelance staff of highly qualified and experienced tandem masters, skydiving instructors, free-fall videographers and packers strive to make your visit to the drop zone – whether you’re a first timer, student or regular jumper – a pleasant one.
The drop zone operates seven days a week, weather permitting, from 09h00 to 17h00. Phone Johnathan on +27 (0)82 800 6290 to check that it is in operation before driving out. Scheduled first jump courses are offered on Saturday mornings and by appointment only on other days. Casual and progressive jumping, tandem skydiving and other courses are offered on all operating days.
A number of accredited skydiving organisations that cater for your requirements operate in the Cape Town area. Contact Cape Town Tourism on +27 (0)21 487 6800 or info@capetown.travel to book your adventure at no extra cost, or visit our tour operator database of companies specialising in skydiving for more information.
