Selfhelp Manenberg

Manenberg is a poverty-stricken community in which crime, substance abuse and unemployment affect two-thirds of the population. Selfhelp Manenberg’s vision is to transform Manenberg into a sustainable, peaceful, healthy and prosperous suburb of Cape Town. Its ongoing mission is to find, encourage and support residents of all ages to build a positive future, to promote and participate in community organising, to encourage a culture of lifelong learning, and to work in conjunction with the Cape Town City Council to make Cape Town a city that works for everyone.

Selfhelp Manenberg’s youth programme is aimed at creating young community members who are vision oriented, socially aware and responsible. To achieve this, the organisation works on whole-school development programmes focusing on environmental health (eco-schools) and career planning. It also runs support groups for out-of-school youths at risk and young offenders.

The family-focused programme inspires residents to (re)create a positive vision for their future, and equips them with the skills and opportunities to create sustainable jobs and small businesses through an Opportunity Centre. The focused parenting project involves skills development, such as life and parenting skills, and training. It also involves behaviour modification, hygiene and school readiness for young children. The goal is to enable parents to be responsible, positive parents, and for their children to be school ready or at least to follow their age-appropriate development stages to become positive, happy children.

A toy library highlights the importance of play through toy sessions at which caregivers interact with and stimulate children’s development.

Allied to the above projects are the “healing businesses” that have been created to alleviate poverty and to make the organisation sustainable. There are currently four healing business units: hospitality industry training, catering training, crafts and community tourism. To find out more about how you can assist, contact selfhelp@iafrica.com.

Individual visits to the facility cost R50 per person, while guided tour group visits cost R150 per person, including lunch. Prior booking is required for catering purposes. Selfhelp Manenberg is open on Mondays to Fridays from 09h00 to 16h00. Contact Patsy Daniels on +27 (0)21 691 5924 or your nearest Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information Centre to make a booking.
