Newlands rugby stadium, officially known as DHL Newlands, is where the Springboks play their international matches in Cape Town. The stadium is also the home ground of the Stormers and Western Province rugby teams.

Situated in the Southern Suburbs, a short walk from the Newlands cricket stadium, DHL Newlands has a capacity of around 52 000, which is regularly reached throughout the year.

Rugby fans in Cape Town tend to turn every major fixture into a big social event, arriving early to have a braai (barbecue) before the game, and partying into the early hours of the next morning afterward. Venues close to the stadium to consider for after-match entertainment include Springbok Pub, Foresters Arms, Tiger Tiger and Tin Roof.

The Stormers (Super 15) and Western Province (Currie Cup) are known for playing an exciting brand of rugby, which is part of the reason they have such a loyal group of supporters.

The ticket office is in Boundary Road, next to the Western Province Rugby Shop. You can also buy tickets through Computicket (www.computicket.com) for most matches.

Note that there is often a cold breeze passing through Newlands stadium, so bring a jacket along to be safe, even on a warmish evening,.

The first official rugby match at Newlands was played in 1890 and the stadium was a venue for several 1995 World Cup matches, including a semi-final.

Visit the SA Rugby Museum at the stadium to see memorabilia and exhibitions.
