For generations the fishermen of Hout Bay have set out in their fishing boats to bring home the bounty of the ocean and offload it for eager buyers on the quayside. Around 25 years ago the original Mariner’s Wharf was reinvented as Africa’s first maritime harbour-front emporium.
Today Mariner’s Wharf attracts many visitors with its picturesque and historic ambience, where seafood restaurants, gift and curio shops, a fish market and bakery lure visitors with their fine fare.
Seafood spectacula
Whether it’s the Wharfside Grill, Wharfette Bistro, fish market or sushi bar, a feast of freshly prepared fish dishes, prawns and calamari await the seafood fundi.
The Wharfside Grill seats 350 patrons and includes lobsters, prawns and delectable sea-fresh fishermen’s baskets on its menu. Six nautical-themed dining cabins cater for more private meals and the restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Wharfette Bistro is a popular takeaway outlet that specialises in good ol’ fish and chips. For the gourmet diner, grilled lobster, prawns, sole and snoek are on the menu. Enjoy your meal at the water’s edge while watching the entertaining antics of seagulls as they scavenge for food on the wing.
Seaside souvenirs
It would be sinful to leave the Mariner’s Wharf without a souvenir! The Mariner’s Chest offers ocean-themed trinkets; choose a stunning pearl piece from Pearls in the Oyster, or make a selection from a vast variety of maritime memorabilia including nautical artefacts, antiques, books, paintings, brassware and shipwreck memorabilia at the Shipwreck Shop. The Wharf’s signature wine in a fish-shaped bottle makes a unique gift.
Fishermen’s market
The hull of a wooden trawler built in the 1940s forms the mainstay of the market, where fresh fish, live lobsters, local and imported seafood are sold daily.
An on-site smokery turns out speciality oak-smoked snoek and delicatessen fare, complemented by a discerning range of estate wine, beer and liqueurs.
