Slotted neatly between the mountains and the ocean, you’ll come upon the picturesque village of Hout Bay, where crafters ply their trade.

Once there, you’ll find it hard to believe you’re a mere 20 minutes away from the Cape Town city centre. The village revolves around a working harbour and is well-equipped for tourists and visitors, with numerous restaurants, the largest bird park in South Africa (the World of Birds), hiking routes, nature reserves and a beckoning white beach.

One of the village’s most popular attractions is the regular Hout Bay craft market, which takes place on the village green in the main street, in a mountainous amphitheatre.

The market, which has been running for more than a decade, opens at 10h00 and closes at 17h00 every Sunday, weather permitting, except for Christmas Day. It is widely rated as one of the best in the Cape and attracts crafters from far and wide who exhibit their wares.

There’s guaranteed to be something for everyone at this popular market. Find clothing, knitwear, leather work, iron- and steelwork, South African curios and wirework, basketry, handmade soaps and toiletries, woodwork, pottery and ceramics, needlework, glass work, mirrors, jewellery, paintings, puppets, candlewicking, shellware, hammocks, plants and cacti, dried fruit and nuts, children’s toys and games, and loads more.
