The newest feather in Cape Town’s cultural cap, the 270-seater Fugard Theatre is located within the historic Sacks Futeran building in Cape Town’s District Six, with the renovated Congregational Church Hall in Caledon Street as its entrance. Construction of The Fugard Theatre was underwritten by its founding producer Eric Abraham, and is named in honour of Athol Fugard, South Africa’s greatest playwright.

Living legend
The living legend for whom the theatre was named is a world-renowned South African playwright, director and actor.
Fugard’s plays include Boesman and Lena, Sizwe Banzi Is Dead, Master Harold … and the boys, The Road to Mecca, My Children! My Africa!, Sorrows and Rejoicings and Coming Home.
He has appeared on stage in South Africa, London, Broadway, off-Broadway, and in regional theatre in the United States. Fugard’s film credits include The Road to Mecca, Gandhi, The Killing Fields, Meetings With Remarkable Men, Marigolds In August, Boesman and Lena, and The Guest.
He penned the novel Tsotsi, which later won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, as well as the Michael Powell Award and the Standard Life Audience Award at the 2005 Edinburgh Film Festival, the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Los Angeles AFI Film Festival.
Fugard has also published his autobiographical memoirs under the title Cousin
