Newlands cricket stadium, officially known as Sahara Park Newlands, with its spectacular views of Table Mountain, is full of sports history and atmosphere.
In the southern suburb of Newlands, about 20 minutes’ drive from the Cape Town city centre, the picturesque Newlands cricket ground is situated a short walk from the Newlands rugby stadium.
You can take the train to the Newlands station or get off the bus near the South African Breweries premises on Main Road, which is within walking distance the cricket ground. If you’re getting there by car, park at one of the schools near the grounds.
The first recorded cricket match in Africa took place between officers in the British army in Cape Town in 1808, and the Newlands cricket oval opened in 1888. In 2003 it hosted the Cricket World Cup opening match.
Sahara Park Newlands, home of Western Province Cricket and the Cape Cobras, has seating for 28 000 people, and Cape Town’s climate is perfect for long summer evenings of cricket. Tickets are usually available from the Campground Road ticket office or through PostNet stores.
