Contrary to popular belief, climbing is not a pursuit limited to the very strong. It has a lot more to do with mental ability and technique, so put your skills to the test at CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym in Observatory, Cape Town.

For beginners
A comprehensive introductory course – Mondays and Wednesdays from 18h00-20h00 – covers climbing basics, fitting your harness and knot tying. On completion you may enjoy seven days of free climbing at the gym. Climbers of all fitness levels and strengths are catered for. Climbing is done with a partner, as while the first person climbs, the second manages the safety rope that holds the climber.

There are three types of climbing available:
* Bouldering – climb over boulders;
* Top-rope climbing – climb routes with a rope attached to the top of the wall;
* Sport/lead climbing – climb a route following a rope clipped into holds along the wall.

There is a fully stocked shop on the premises and climbing gear is available for hire.

Hours and rates
Open from 11h00-21h00 on Monday to Thursday. On Friday the gym opens at 11h00 and closes at 18h00. Over the weekend doors open at 10h00 and close at 18h00, as they do on public holidays. Closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. A comprehensive rates schedule is available, tailored to your chosen activity and age. Please visit www.cityrock.co.za to check which rates apply to you.
