The beautiful Cape Helderberg region offers a wonderful combination of nature and winelands just 45km (28mi) from Cape Town.

The Helderberg region incorporates the towns of Gordon’s Bay, Lwandle, Macassar, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Somerset West and Strand. Getting there takes about an hour’s drive and the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges provide a scenic backdrop to the Winelands and False Bay coastline.

The region has its own wine route, known as the Helderberg Wine Route, which incorporates more than 20 wine estates, with Somerset West forming the gateway to the winelands. Vergelegen, +27 (0)21 847 1334, and Morgenster, +27 (0)21 852 1738, are two notable wineries in the area.

En route you’ll find Avontuur Estate, +27 (0)21 855 3450, an award-winning winery situated between Somerset West and Stellenbosch; JP Bredell Wines, +27 (0)21 842 2478, renowned for its reds and port; and Longridge Winery, +27 (0)21 855 2004, based on the longest ridge of the Helderberg Mountains (hence the name) and one of the country’s most established boutique wineries.

For those who love the great outdoors, the Helderberg Nature Reserve, +27 (0)21 851 4060, is a must. Situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, with breathtaking views of False Bay, the reserve is home to a spectacular array of plant and bird life.

The reserve is famous for its proteas, and the indigenous nursery is a definite drawcard. Enjoy guided walks to learn more about the local flora and fauna (proteas, fynbos, birds and medicinal plants).

The birdlife is prolific and you might be fortunate to spot bontebok, tortoises and duiker. The Helderberg Nature Reserve is the ideal spot for a relaxed picnic while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature.

If you feel the urge to swim or surf, the Helderberg region has two fantastic beach areas – Gordon’s Bay and the Strand. There is also a range of adventure activities on offer in the area, including paragliding.

For the more sedate at heart, there are three 18-hole golf courses on offer, including Erinvale Estate and Spa, +27 (0)21 847 1160.

Don’t miss out on the whale viewing between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els from June to December.
