Safari Ostrich Show Farm
The world's largest flightless bird can be ridden, and lays the world's largest egg – which has a shell so strong, it can withstand the weight of an adult. You can experience all of that and more at the Safari Ostrich Show Farm in Oudtshoorn, the capital of the ostrich industry.
Multilingual guides will take you on a tour of the farm, where you will be able to experience every step of ostrich farming, from breeding to rearing. Ostrich feathers were so highly sought-after in the late 1800s that they were South Africa's fourth-largest export product after gold, diamonds and wool.
You are also welcome to try your hand at riding an ostrich, or leave it to the professionals, at the end of your tour. Local jockeys show off their prowess in an ostrich derby, where they try and outrace each other on their feathered steeds.
Visit our shop, stocked with ostrich leather goods made by highly trained craftsmen, items made of ostrich feathers and intricately carved, painted and decoupage ostrich eggs.
