Muizenberg and Kalk Bay Theatres

Although Kalk Bay and Muizenberg are perhaps best known for their beautiful beaches, there's often good theatre on in these towns, too. Photo © Cape Town Tourism

Masque Theatre
The Masque Theatre is on the Main Road (M4) in Muizenberg. It regularly hosts plays, musicals, ballet recitals and comedy shows.

Car attendants and ample parking are provided, and the bar is open for refreshments.

The theatre was founded in 1959 by Bertie Stern to foster a universal love for theatre. His dream lives on in the Muizenberg community. Despite a fire that ravaged the premises in 1999, the theatre was rebuilt. A highlight nine years after the fire was the hosting of the theatre’s 100th performance – Witness for the Prosecution – an Agatha Christie drama.

For R40 you can join the Masque Theatre Club, keep up-to-date with all shows, and earn discounted tickets. Email masquetheatre@mweb.co.za for more information.

Booking hours: 09h00-16h00 on weekdays or 09h30-11h30 on Saturdays. Performances are held on week nights at 20h00 and on Saturdays at 14h30 and 18h30.
Prices: Evening: R60, Matinees: R50.

The Kalk Bay Theatre (http://kbt.co.za/)
This 78-seater gallery theatre was once a Dutch Reformed church. Today the small building – constructed in 1876 – enjoys heritage protection.

Friends gather around 18h00 to reserve their seats before enjoying a light meal and drink on the upper-level bar, ahead of the evening’s entertainment. Food is served before the show, unless by prior arrangement.

Each show runs for eight weeks, from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 20h30 (Sunday performances are occasional, so please check before arriving.)

Check the theatre’s website for what’s on, or give Cape Town Tourism a call.
