The Baxter Theatre Centre
The Baxter Theatre Centre is situated in Rondebosch, in the Southern Suburbs, and is one of the pre-eminent theatres of the Cape Town social and cultural scene.
The Baxter hosts and produces local and international groundbreaking and award-winning shows. Annual events like the Nando’s Festival, the Vodacom Funny Festival and the Baxter Dance Festival are very popular, as are classical music concerts, dance, music, drama, ballet, opera and live and intimate theatre. The Baxter’s offerings are diverse.
It also has strong links to the University of Cape Town.
The theatre first raised its curtains in 1977 and is named after Dr W Duncan Baxter, who bequeathed money to the University of Cape Town in his will to “develop and cultivate the arts in Cape Town and the adjacent districts”. Famed South African architect Jack Barnett designed the theatre centre. The main theatre has a seating capacity of 666, the concert hall (with a Rudolph von Beckerath organ) has a seating capacity of 638, and the 172-seater Golden Arrow studio is ideal for smaller performances.
The centre also has conference facilities and two in-house restaurants. Its daytime conference venues offer world-class facilities and can accommodate up to 660 people in two different locations. If you are looking for a great evening out, the Baxter has two restaurants: Play Bar – a coffee bar by day and a trendy tapas and wine bar by night – and the Act Restaurant – usually open for pre-show dining and offering a gourmet à la carte menu and extensive wine list.
On Saturdays, the theatre caters for children and teenagers with acting, traditional songs and modern dance workshops.
Contact the Baxter during office hours (09h00 to 13h00 and 14h00 to 17h00) to make your booking.
