Following a highly successful 2010 FIFA World Cup™, Cape Town Stadium will host a Premier Soccer League (PSL) double header on August 27. According to Kick-Off.com the matches will be Ajax Cape Town against Bloemfontein Celtic and Vasco da Gama against Orlando Pirates.

There is talk that Cape Town Stadium will host Bafana Bafana later this year or early in 2011; this would be the first time the national team has played in the Mother City since 2007. There will be lots of other football action at the stadium in the coming months in the form of PSL matches, as well as the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival and the Vodacom Challenge next year.

Rugby fans can also look forward to plenty of action at the stadium. Cape Town Stadium is set to host International Rugby Board Sevens matches later this year, as well as Varsity Cup games and the Cape Town Stadium Rugby Festival (scheduled to be a friendly between the Stomers and Saracens of London) early next year. The Springboks will hopefully play one of their 2011 Tri-Nations matches at the stadium too.

With a capacity of 68 000, the stadium is able to host more than just sporting fixtures and there are already plans for a New Year’s Eve event there.

The iconic arena, known as Green Point Stadium during the World Cup, hosted eight matches and more than half-a-million people during the tournament, including celebrities such as Leonardo di Caprio, Orlando Bloom, Charlize Theron and Prince Albert of Monaco – to name just a few.

Cape Town Tourism will keep you up to date with news and developments regarding the stadium.
